WELFARE OF AGED PERSONS
Work in connection with the welfare of aged persons again figured
prominently in the day to day activities of many members of the staff of the
department:-

Very close co operation was again maintained with officers of the health
and welfare departments of the County Council as well as with the staff of the
Geriatric Department of the Hackney Hospital, As a result of this co-operation,
little time was lost in finding accommodation for aged persons in the County
Council' s homes and for the aged sick in hospital beds. The Hackney Association
for the Welfare of Old People was at all times ready to co-operate with
the Department and we are most grateful to the officers and members of that
Association for their continued help,
NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT, 1948. SECTION 47 (Removal to suitable premises of
persons in need of care and attention). It was necessary to have recourse to
the powers contained in this section in one instance only - this was the case
of an old lady aged 85 years who was found to be suffering from gross neglect,
malnutrition and to be living in dangerously insanitary conditions - she was in
urgent need of care and attention. An Order for her removal to Hackney
Hospital was obtained from a Justice of the Peace.
