for England and Wales is the lowest ever recorded, being 0.5 per 1,000 below
that for 1957, the previous lowest. Comparable infant mortality figures for
Hackney, London, and England and Wales, for the last five years:–

From the following table it will be seen that of the 56 infant deaths, 36
occurred in the first four weeks of life, and twenty-three of these occurred in
the first 24 hours. Some 20 deaths were associated with prematurity, and congenital
malformations accounted for thirteen.
