Infant mortality There were 54 deaths of children under one year, with a resultant
infant mortality rate of 23.18 per thousand live births, as compared with a
rate of 23, 2 for the County of London and 24.90 for England and Wales. The rate
for England and Wales was the lowest ever recorded, being 0.5 per 1,000 below
that for 1954, which was the previous lowest recorded death rate for infants.
