boilers, etc. The water is tested from time to time by the works'
chemist.
Oxo Ltd., Waterden Road.—The well at these premises was
bored in 1935 and is 400 feet deep. The water is pumped direct
to a storage tank and is used only for cleaning purposes. The
water is tested by the firm's chemist.
DISUSED WELLS
Hackney Public Baths, 39—41, Lower Clapton Road.—The
two bore-holes on these premises, 457 feet and 402 feet deep
respectively, are now disused. The pumping gear has been dismantled
and the bores are satisfactorily sealed off.
Richards Bros., 2, Buckingham Road.—Two shallow bores,
18 feet deep, which were in use on these premises, have been dismantled
and the bores are satisfactorily sealed off.
Sterilised Milk Company, 178, Culford Road.—The use of
the well on these premises, 450 feet deep, sunk in 1922, has been
discontinued, the bore-pipe withdrawn and the main lining left in
and capped with iron flange plate.
Express Dairy Co., Ltd., 2, Maury Road.—These premises
were demolished during the "blitz" and the head of the well-bore
partly covered by an iron plate is still exposed on the site. To
prevent interference this has been covered by concrete.
British Patent Perforated Paper Co., Ltd., Berkshire
Road.—There were two bore-holes at this address, but the pumps
have been dismantled and the yard paving made good over the
holes. There is no information available as to the manner of
sealing the bores.
Home Counties Dairies, Ltd., 17—19, Northwold Road.—
The 350-feet bore which was made in 1909 is not at present being
used, although it is not decided finally to abandon the possibility
of such use. The bore has been suitably capped with an iron
flange.
Summarised, the present position is that at the commencement
of the year there were in the Borough fifteen premises in
which fourteen wells were actively in use and nine wells which
had been abandoned and sealed off.
