Street. This lodging-house, which was inspected seven times
during the year, provides accommodation for 139 men only.
Water Supply.—The water supply of the Borough is under
the control of the Metropolitan Water Board. All the dwellinghouses
in the Borough are supplied from the Board's mains direct
to the houses, and no report of any form of contamination of the
water supply was received during the year.
LONDON UNDERGROUND WATER.
The results of a survey and sampling of the wells in Hackney
were reported to the Ministry of Health in May, 1939. The
Ministry issued The Water Abstraction Regulations, 1947, dated
31st October, 1947, made by the Minister of Health under Section 6
of the Water Act, 1945. These regulations do not apply where
water is abstracted by an individual for the domestic purposes
of his household only, otherwise a person who abstracts water
from an "underground work," which means well, bore-hole, adit
or other underground work used for obtaining a supply of water,
shall keep records of the amount of water abstracted "provided
that a person who abstracts water from an underground work
by means of pumping shall not be required to keep such records
in respect of that work unless either—
(a) the work is capable of yielding, if situated in an area
mentioned in the first schedule to these regulations, at
least 20,000, and if situated elsewhere, at least 50,000
gallons of water a day; or
(b) the work is one of two or more underground works
which supply or may be used to supply water to the same
premises by means of pumping and are capable of yielding
in the aggregate, if the work is situated in an area
mentioned as aforesaid, at least 20,000, and is situated
elsewhere, at least 50,000 gallons of water a day."
