Metropolitan Borough of Hackney
REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1947
Public Health Department,
Town Hall, Hackney, E.8.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney.
In accordance with Ministry of Health Circular 170/47 this
report on the Health of the Borough in 1947 has been prepared in
the abridged form which was requested during the war years and
subsequently.
Some mention should be made in the Annual Report of the
unprecedented difficulties experienced by the Public Health
Department throughout 1947 and the last months of the preceding
year. At the same time I am fortunately able to state that the
position has altered enormously for the better. An endeavour
can now be made to cope with the arrears of work and even make
advances in some directions. In particular, the improvement
of conditions as regards licensing has removed the irritation and
frustration felt by the Department, particularly by the sanitary
inspectors, and there is every reason to hope that the public will
again regard the Department as able and willing to enforce the
carrying out of essential sanitary repairs.
