The birth-rate of 21.16 per 1,000 of the population is the
highest recorded in the Borough since 1921.
The 84 still-births registered during the year represent a rate
of 0.48 per 1,000 of the population, the comparable rate for England
and Wales being 0.50 and for London 0.49.
The birth of 178 illegitimate children (168 living and 10stillborn)
represents a rate of 47.2 per 1,000 total births.
Notification of Births.—During the year 1947, notifications
were received of the birth within the Borough of 5,514 live children
and 133 still-born children. Information with regard to the birth
of children to Hackney mothers at addresses outside the Borough
was received in respect of 912 living and 17 still-born children,
whilst particulars of the birth of children within the Borough
whose home addresses were situated in other areas were forwarded
in the case of 2,742 living and 74 still-born children.

DEATHS.
The deaths of civilians registered during the year, adjusted
for inward and outward transfers, numbered 2,114. The crude
death-rate from all causes was 12.1. The rate for England and
Wales was 12.0 and that for London 12.8.
