Dr. H. Tylford Howell retired during this year. Dr. Howell
had worked in Hackney for over thirty years as Tuberculosis Officer
and he was regarded by the staff and by his patients as a friend in
all matters in which he could be of assistance. The medical
practitioners had every reason to regard him as a consultant of the
highest standing. His retirement was a great loss to the Borough.
Throughout the entire year, in spite of the obvious vulnerability
of the Public Health Department to adverse criticism, the
attitude of the Public Health Committee at all times and in all
circumstances was sympathetic, helpful and constructive. On not
one occasion was anything added to the difficulties of the Department
either by the Committee or by any member of the Committee and,
although the experiences of this year will never be forgotten by the
Department, the consideration and sympathy shown by the
Committee and by each member of the Committee, which was so
valuable to the Department at such a time, must also be gratefully
recorded. I cannot speak too highly, also, of the work of the staff
of the Public Health Department during the past year.
G. H. DART,
Medical Officer of Health.
