At the request of the Ministry of Food the bacteriological
examination of heat-treated milk was undertaken, and added about
one-third to the number of samples of milk sold under special
designations already taken and examined annually. Provisional
licences had been granted by the Ministry of Food to three dairies
in the Borough for the production of heat-treated milk, a new type
of plant being used in this process.
Four hundred and four samples were taken of milk sold under
Special Designations and 25 of these were found not to conform to
the requirements of the Orders. The vendors of these samples were
warned and advice given to enable the cause of the adverse reports
to be rectified. The practice of submitting all samples of pasteurised
milk to the phosphatase test was again followed and 22 samples
were reported positive by this test. These samples were examined
for tubercle bacilli with negative results.
Premises used for the preparation or manufacture of sausages
or potted, pressed, pickled or preserved food are required to be registered
by Section 14 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938. At the end
of the year the number of premises remaining on the register was
148.
The names and addresses of 101 persons remained on the
Council's list of persons entitled to sell poisons under Part 2 of the
Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933. No action was necessary in
respect of any offence under the Act.

concerned (meat or fish paste) was manufactured and labelled
before the issue of the Meat Products Order, 1944. Legal proceedings
were taken as regards the two samples of milk and fines
totalling £10 with £7 7s. costs were imposed.
