When the scheme was formulated it was decided that charges
for the help given should be assessed in accordance with the scale
which has for some time past been used under the Maternity and
Child Welfare Home Helps Scheme, but at a later date it was
decided to adopt the method and scale of assessment recommended
by the Metropolitan Boroughs' Standing Joint Committee. The
expenditure incurred by the Council in providing home helps in
other than maternity cases is reimbursed from exchequer funds.

The period of service in maternity cases is usually the fourteen
days following confinement. In non-maternity cases the period of
service given was as follows:—
Less than one month 24 cases
Between one and two months 8 „
Between two and three months 2 „
Longer than three months 26 „
