Maternity Outfits.— Nine sterilised maternity outfits were
issued during the year at cost price.
Consultants in Difficult Maternity Cases.— There was no case
during the year in which the services of an obstetric specialist were
required in connection with difficult confinement.
Emergency Obstetric Service.— The emergency obstetric unit
attached to Hackney Hospital was used in one case during the year.
This patient had collapsed following sudden and profuse postpartum
haemorrhage. Treatment was given by transfusion and her
condition so improved that removal to hospital was unnecessary.
Day Nurseries.— The Council's eight day nurseries, providing
accommodation for 415 children under the age of 5 years, continued
to function throughout the year despite difficulties. The
total number of attendances made by the children during the year
was 87,090. No doubt this number would have been much larger
but for the fact that during the first few months of the year many
of the nursery children were evacuated to safer areas during the
flying bomb and rocket attacks.
The termination of hostilities did not have the effect upon the
demand for nursery accommodation which might have been expected,
and by the end of 1945 the number of children awaiting
admission had increased to 284.
