Maternity Hospital Accommodation.— The Council pays the
sum of one guinea in respect of each necessitous person admitted
from the borough for treatment at either of the under-mentioned
hospitals. Expectant mothers are deemed to be eligible for assistance
under this scheme if by reason of poverty or other cause they
are unable to pay an amount equal to half the average cost per
patient of the maintenance and administration charges of the
hospital concerned for the preceding year.
The number of patients assisted under this scheme, together
with the cost to the Council during the year is shown below:—

In addition arrangements were made for the admission of
44 women to St. Bartholomew's Hospital and 12 women to Poplar
Hospital for confinement.
Charges for Maternity and Child Welfare Services.— During
1944 the Council revised the income scale, adopted in 1920, for
assessing the ability of parents to contribute towards the cost of
maternity and child welfare services (other than the provision of
Home Helps) provided under the Council's scheme. This revision
had become necessary as a result of the increase during the war in
the cost of living.

The following is the revised scale:—
