I have once again to place on record my appreciation of the
excellence of the work of the entire staff of the Department. The
full support and co-operation which I received from every member
of the staff throughout the war years enabled the Department to
cope most successfully with the additional duties and responsibilities
placed upon it in connection with the Civil Defence Casualty
Services and the institution of war-time day nurseries and various
other extensions of its social services, and brought considerable
credit upon the Department. It was particularly gratifying
that His Majesty the King was graciously pleased to appoint Mr.
L. W. Dawson, Sanitary Inspector, and Miss H.J. Howse, Superintendent
Matron of the Council's day nurseries, to Membership
of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and to confer
upon Mr. R. T. Gratwick, Sanitary Inspector, the British Empire
Medal. The awards to Messrs. Dawson and Gratwick were in
respect of their services in connection with the Civil Defence firstaid
post and light rescue services respectively, whilst the award
to Miss Howse was in recognition of her work in connection with
the day nursery service.
I have also to express my gratitude to the Chairman and
members of the Public Health and Maternity and Child Welfare
Committees for their unfailing support throughout the year.
G. H. DART,
Medical Officer of Health.
