Anti-toxin Mixture was discontinued it was necessary to start using Alum
Precipitated Toxoid, but the conversion rate was not as high as was secured with
Toxoid Anti-toxin Mixture, only 91.1 per cent. negative results being obtaineds
As before, I have encouraged the mothers to bring their children to the clinic.
two years after a negative Schick test to ascertain that the immunity had not
been lost. One hundred and six children were tested in that way and six proved
to be positive again and had to be re-immunised. This high percentage proves
that the practice of re-testing children every two years until the age of about
ten is highly justifiable and must be encouraged everywhere. Thirteen immunised
childr n were reported to have contracted diphtheria during the year, but only
four actually had clinical diphtheria, which was mild in each case. Two out
of these four cases could have been prevented, if the children had been re-tested
as I have advocated above.
Again I wish to thank the nursing and clerical staff at the clinics for their
excellent help under adverse conditions.
TUBERCULOSIS.
During the year under review 237 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis
and 41 cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis were notified
for the first time under the Public Health (Tuberculosis) Regulations,
1930.
From the following table it will be seen that the number of cases of tuberculosis notified in Hackney declined fairly steadily from 1920 until 1941, when war-time circumstances commenced to affect the Borough's tuberculosis case rate:—
