The number of births and the birth-rates in England and Wales, London and Hackney, in 1944, together with the rates for the previous four years are shown below:—

The 58 still-births registered during the year represent a rate
of 0.42 per 1,000 of the population, the comparable rate for England
and Wales being 0.50 and for London 0.42.
The birth of 147 illegitimate children (144 living and 3 stillborn)
represents a rate of 55.6 per 1,000 total births.
Notification of Births.—During the year 1944, notifications
were received of the birth within the Borough of 2,792 live children
and 76 still-born children. Information with regard to the birth
of children to Hackney mothers at addresses outside the Borough
was received in respect of 443 living and 6 still-born children,
whilst particulars of the birth of children within the Borough
whose home addresses were situated in other areas were forwarded
in the case of 1,436 living and 43 still-born children.

DEATHS.
The deaths of civilians registered during the year, adjusted
for inward and outward transfers numbered 1,946. The crude
death-rate from all causes was 14.3. The rate for England and
Wales was 11.6 and that for London 15.7.
