86 pulmonary and 16 non-pulmonary, as compared with 127 deaths
from pulmonary tuberculosis and 15 from non-pulmonary tuberculosis
in the previous year. The attack rate was 2.12 and the
death-rate 0.77 per 1,000 of the population.
The number of new cases of tuberculosis notified in the Borough
during the year was higher than in any year since 1937 but, on the
other hand, the deaths from tuberculosis were fewer than ever
previously recorded.
New patients attending at the two Tuberculosis Dispensaries
numbered 925, of which number 245 were found to be suffering from
pulmonary tuberculosis and 27 from non-pulmonary tuberculosis.
In addition, 188 contacts of notified cases were examined and 6 were
found to be suffering from tuberculosis.
Eighty-two patients received a total of 1,105 artificial pneumothorax
refills at an expense to the Council of £445 15s. 6d. Six
patients received Finsen and arc light treatment for lupus, the cost
to the Council of the 270 treatments being £41 6s.
Beds and bedding were loaned to 14 patients during the year.
The loan of garden shelters to three patients was continued.
One patient was supplied with dentures at a cost to the Council
of £2 10s., and 72 patients were granted extra nourishment.
SCABIES AND VERMINOUS CONDITIONS.
