Emergency Obstetric Service.—The emergency obstetric unit
attached to Hackney Hospital was used in one case during the year.
The unit was summoned at the request of a private practitioner, the
patient was given a general anaesthetic and was delivered of a live
child.
Home Helps.—The Council's revised home help scheme was in
operation throughout 1942. At the end of the year 13 women were
being employed and during the year 131 applications for the services
of these women were received. Wages paid totalled £632, and £125
was collected from parents.
The services of experienced women for 14 days from the time of
confinement were of undoubted value and expressions of appreciation
were received in several cases.
Day Nurseries.—As was stated ir^ my Report for 1941 it is
proposed to establish in the Borough eight war-time day nurseries,
which should bring nursery facilities within reasonable access of any
address in the Borough. During 1942 arrangements were made
with the London County Council for the establishment of nurseries
for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years at three emergency
rest centres.
