Metropolitan Borough of Hackney
REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1941.
Public Health Department,
Town Hall, Hackney, tc.8.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney.
This Annual Report has been prepared on abridged lines in
accordance with Ministry of Health Circular No. 2604 and therefore
contains only such particulars as are necessary to enable an
estimate to be made of the health of the population and to give an
idea of the maintenance of the health services under present
conditions.
The number of live births to Hackney women fell from 2,565 in
1940 to 1,802 in 1941, and the birth-rate from 15.2 to 13.7. The
number of deaths which occurred in 1941 (1,940) also shows a
considerable drop as compared with the previous year when 2,788
deaths occurred. The death-rate from all causes was 15.6 as compared
with 16.5 in the previous year. Only 73 deaths of children
under 12 months of age occurred during the year, the infant
mortality rate being 50.20 per 1,000 live births.
A table is given on page 7 from which the birth, death and
infant mortality rates for Hackney can be compared with those for
London and the country as a whole. The birth and mortality rates
cannot accurately be compared with the rates for pre-war years since
they are founded upon population estimates which exclude members
of the Armed Forces of both sexes and this is also true of the
infectious disease rates.
