MORTUARY.
The Hackney Public Mortuary is situated in The Churchyard,
E.8, and is used for the reception of bodies of persons dying in
Hackney, also for the accommodation of the bodies of residents of
Hackney who die in other districts. Under an agreement between
the two Borough Councils the Hackney Public Mortuary is also used
for the reception and post-mortem examination of persons dying
in Stoke Newington
During 1938 an extensive scheme of alterations and improvements
at the Mortuary was approved by the Council. The scheme
provides for a change-over of the mortuary and post-mortem rooms,
installation of a temperature controlled unit providing accommodation
for fifteen bodies, two new post-mortem tables making three
tables available for post-mortem examinations, additional sinks,
improved heating, lighting and ventilation, new floors, and oak
panelling to the Chapel. When completed, these improvements
will result in the Mortuary being satisfactory in every respect.

Details of the bodies received at the Mortuary and of the inquests held in the adjoining Coroner's Court are given below:—
