MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During 1938 there was only one death among Hackney women
from causes directly connected with childbirth. This represents a
death-rate of 0.35 mothers per 1,000 total births. The total number
of births was 2,841.
The death of the only Hackney woman in 1938 following childbirth
was due to Vincent's infection of the throat and gums followed
by bronchiectasis and finally puerperal sepsis. The woman was
confined and died in hospital.
The maternal deaths and death-rates in the years 1934 to 1938 in England and Wales, London and Hackney were as follows:—

The special arrangements made by the Borough Council for the
investigation of maternal deaths and cases of puerperal fever and
puerperal pyrexia are described on page 65 of this Report.
SENILE MORTALITY.
The deaths of Hackney residents of 65 years of age and upwards
which occurred during 1938 numbered 1,009; of these, 461 were
between the ages of 65 and 75 years, and 548 at 75 years and
upwards. The annual mortality-rate of persons at 65 years and
upwards is 4.9 per 1,000 inhabitants.
