Poliomyelitis.—Three cases of poliomyelitis were notified in
the Borough during 1938. All the patients were removed to
hospital. There were no deaths from this disease during the year.
Dysentery.—Twenty-one cases of this disease were notified
during the year, and 15 of the patients were removed to hospital.
The diagnosis in three of the cases was amended after observation
in hospital, so that the actual number of cases which occurred was
18. There were 3 deaths.
Measles and Whooping Cough.—Under the County of London
(Measles and Whooping Cough) Regulations, 1938, these diseases
became compulsorily notifiable as from the 1st October, 1938.
All medical practitioners practising in the Borough were
supplied with a copy of the Regulations, and attention was directed
to the fact that notification is not required where, to the knowledge
of the medical practitioner, a case of measles or whooping cough
as the case may be, has occurred in the house and has been notified
within two months immediately preceding the date on which he
first became aware of the disease in the case he is attending.

The number of cases of measles and German measles reported to the Public Health Department from various sources in 1938 was 2,422, as compared with 399 cases in 1937 and 2,762 in 1936. The following table shows the number of cases reported in each month of the year:—
