The following tables relating to the results of routine medical
inspection of 9,777 elementary school children in Hackney during
1935, kindly supplied by the School Medical Officer of the London
County Council, give an indication of the influence of unemployment
upon the health and physique of the residents of the Borough.
It will be seen from the first of these tables that as regards
nutrition, clothing and boots, personal cleanliness and teeth the
condition of Hackney children compares favourably with that of all
London elementary school children. The second table shows that
137 children up to 14 years of age (1.4 per cent. of the children
examined) were found to be suffering from malnutrition severe
enough to require treatment. There were no cases of phthisis and
only 16 cases of rickets (11 not requiring treatment) among the
children examined.
