The following is a Report by the Dental Surgeon :—
Report by H. C. Middleton, L.D.S., R.C.S. (Edin.).
The work of the Dental Clinic goes quietly on as an accepted part of the
health services of the Borough. The prejudice against dental treatment during
pregnancy is dying out. This is probably due to the record of the Clinic,
together with the persuasion of the Health Visitors.
During the past five years 1,190 general anæsthetics have been given for
teeth extractions without untoward results.
The new equipment supplied during the year renders the surgery worthy
of the Borough and is greatly appreciated.
I have again to report the deplorable condition of the teeth of children
between the ages of two and five years. This is due to poor calcification, and
is caused by malnutrition resulting from faults in food and feeding in both
the mother and the child. As ante-natal care and treatment increases, I look
for an improvement in the children's teeth.
Day Nursery .—A day nursery was established by a voluntary
committee at No. 85, Hackney Grove and was opened in April, 1934.
The nursery, which provides accommodation for ten babies under
2 years and twenty children between 2 and 5 years, was open for
142 days during the year, when the following attendances of infants
and children were made:—
Attendances of infants under 2 years 944
Attendances of children between 2 and 5 years1,860
Total number of attendances 2,804
An annual grant of £200 has been made by the Borough Council
to the committee of the day nursery.
