Influenza.—During 1934 there were 26 deaths in the Borough
from this disease.
This is a decrease of 83 as compared with the number of deaths
from this cause registered during 1933. The annual mortality.rate
from influenza is 0.12 per 1,000 inhabitants, as compared with 0.12
for London and 0.14 for England and Wales.
Diarrhoea.—The total number of deaths from this cause was
38, and of these 29 were under one year of age. The number of
deaths from this disease in 1933 was 33. The annual mortality.
rate for diarrhoea and enteritis during the year is 0.18 per 1,000
inhabitants.
Whooping Cough.—The deaths from this cause during the year
numbered 7. This is a decrease of 3 upon the number registered
during 1933. All of these deaths occurred in children under five
years of age. The mortality for Hackney is equal to 0.03 per 1,000
inhabitants, and that for London 0.07 per 1,000 inhabitants. The
nurses of the Hackney District Nursing Association attended 4 cases
and paid 43 visits.
Information was received from the headmasters and headmistresses
of elementary schools in Hackney of 226 cases occurring
among their scholars during the year, whilst 58 cases came to the
knowledge of the Department from other sources.
CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.

Cancer.—There were 358 deaths during 1934 due to malignant
disease. This is an increase of 32 upon the number registered
during 1933. The mortality.rate from malignant disease for last
year was, therefore, 1.69 per 1,000 inhabitants.
