Butter Factories are required by the Food and Drugs (Adulteration)
Act, 1928, to be registered by the owner or occupier with the
Food and Drugs Authority.
An application was received during the year for the registration
of a butter factory situated in the same building as a provision warehouse
in which margarine is stored. At the time of the application
there was no substantial separation or walling-off of the warehouse
from the proposed factory or separate entrance to the factory on the
lines provided by the Food and Drugs (Adulteration) Act, 1928.
The owner was required entirely to separate from the remainder
of the building that part of the premises to be used as a butter factory
and to provide a separate entrance. These conditions having been
complied with, the application for registration was granted.
Upon the registration of this factory the applicant gave up the
blending of butter at the premises he formerly used for this purpose,
and the factory was removed from the register. There is, therefore,
still only one butter factory in the Borough. No offences were noted
during the frequent inspection of these premises.
Artificial Cream Act, 1929.—This Act is designed to regulate
the manufacture and sale of any substance resembling cream and
containing nothing but the ingredients of cream.
At the end of 1934 two premises were on the register kept in
this connexion. At one of these artificial cream is made and sold,
and at the other this substance is sold but not manufactured.
Public Health (Condensed Milk) Regulations, 1923 and 1927.—
Twenty-one samples of condensed milk were taken during the year
and each was found to comply with the Regulations in every respect.
Public Health (Dried Milk) Regulations, 1923 and 1927.—No
samples of dried milk were taken during the year.
Public Health (Preservatives, etc., in Food) Regulations, 19251927.—The
action taken in regard to a sample of food found to
contain preservative in contravention of the Regulations is shown
on page 98 of this Report.
Merchandise Marks Act, 1926, and Agricultural Produce
(Grading and, Marking) Act, 1928.—Three additional Orders have
been made under the Merchandise Marks Act requiring the indication
or origin to be applied, in the manner specified in the Orders,
