In addition, there are a large number of itinerant vendors who
hawk food around the streets. The stores of all street traders in
food were inspected before a licence was granted or renewed.
One hundred and thirty-seven notices were served for defects
or contraventions of the law relating to food premises.
Cleanliness of Employees at Food Premises.— The proprietors of
food premises were asked during the year to exhibit a poster in
the lavatories of their establishments drawing the attention of
employees to the necessity for personal cleanliness. This poster,
copies of which are supplied as required, reads as follows :—

Employees are requested to wash their hands before leaving this apartment.
It should be remembered that persons handling food intended for human
consumption should exercise the utmost care in order to prevent contamination
The London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1908, with regard to
food premises provides as follows:—
Sec. 8 (f):—" Due cleanliness shall be observed in regard to such
room, shop or other part of a building, and all articles, apparatus and
utensils therein and shall be observed by persons engaged in such room,
shop or other part of a building."
If any person does any act or thing in contravention of the above he is
liable on summary conviction to penalties.
Disregard of this notice may result in dismissal.
