stunning shall be effected by means of a mechanically
operated instrument ; but this shall only apply to sheep
if the local authority so decide by resolution.
(2) That the local authority shall license slaughtermen. Licences
may only be granted to persons of the age of eighteen years
or upwards who are, in the opinion of the local authority,
fit and proper to hold a licence. A licence shall be in force
for such period not exceeding three years as may be specified
therein, and may be renewed from time to time at the
discretion of the local authority. The licence, when issued,
shall be in force in the district of the local authority granting
the same, and also in the district of any other local authority,
and must be produced on demand for inspection by such
other local authority.
The Council has resolved that the Act shall apply to sheep,
ewes, wethers, rams and lambs, and that licences shall be issued
for a period of one year at a fee of 2s. for each original licence and
Is. for each renewal thereof.
Twenty-two applications for licences have been received, twenty
of which were granted and two refused.
Unsound Food.—The following foodstuffs were examined and
condemned by the Council's Food Inspectors and surrendered to
the Council for destruction in accordance with Section 47 of the
Public Health (London) Act, 1891 :—

4J cwt. beef and mutton.
1 cwt. pork.
226 rabbits.
44 pigeons.
2,707 tins sardines.
277 jars herrings.
13 boxes kippers.
144 tins cherries.
1 case dates.
118 cases dried fruit.
39 cases fruit salad.
1 case pineapple.
50 cases prunes.
11 cases tinned fruit.
2 cases peas.
50 cases cheese.
768 tins cream.
3 cases jam.
500 tins condensed milk.

12 tons 18 cwt. various foods.
3 tons various tinned foods.

The weight of the foodstuffs condemned, including the diseased meat condemned at the slaughterhouses, was :—
