In connection with the work of collection and removal of road
sweepings and market refuse, an additional "Electricar" vehicle
with dust canopy fitted with steel roller shutters has been purchased
and put into commission.
The seven "Electricar" vehicles formerly used in connection
with this work have been improved and brought up to date by the
fitting of dust canopies with steel roller shutters, in lieu of the
original covers.
These vehicles collect the contents of the barrow bins in their
travel through the streets, and remove to the Council's shoot.
One gross of litter receptacles for placing in the public highways
have been installed in addition to those formerly in use.
Gulley Cleansing.
The street gulleys are emptied, flushed and re-sealed by means
of the use of a Fowler Mechanical Gulley Emptier (steam) on a
continuous beat system.
The machine is accompanied by two men, i.e., a driver and an
assistant for the lifting of the gratings and insertion of the suction
pipe.
Gulleys in street markets are cleansed fortnightly; in main
roads five times in two months, and the remainder monthly.
Cleansing by hand is only resorted to in very narrow streets
and culs-de-sac where it is not possible to manoeuvre the machine.
The vehicles in use in street cleansing consist of:—
1 "Garrett" Electric 2-ton tipping van.
8 "Electricar" low-loading vans fitted with dust canopies.
2 "Karrier" Sweeping and Collecting Machines.
3 "Laffly" Sweeping Machines.
1 "Fowler" Gulley Cleansing Machine.
2 "Ashbury" Road Gritting Machines.
