MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During 1933 there were 10 deaths of Hackney women from
causes directly connected w ith childbirth. This represents a deathrate
of 3.2 mothers per 1,000 total births.
The actual causes of death were :—
Placenta prævia 2
Septic abortion 2
Cardiac embolus 1
Operative shock (cæsarian hysterectomy) 1
Puerperal septicæmia 1
Pulmonary embolus 1
Ruptured ectopic gestation 1
Ruptured extra uterine gestation 1
The maternal deaths and death-rates in the years 1929 to 1933 in England and Wales, London and Hackney were as follow :—

investigation of maternal deaths and cases of puerperal fever and
puerperal pyrexia are described on page 50 of this Report.
SENILE MORTALITY.
The deaths which occurred in Hackney at 65 years of age and
upwards during 1933 numbered 1,164, and of these 561 were between
the ages of 65 and 75 years, 458 between 75 and 85 years, and 145
at 85 years and upwards. The annual mortality-rate of persons at
65 years and upwards is 5.4 per 1,000 inhabitants.
