STATISTICS AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA.
The Metropolitan Borough of Hackney covers an area of
3,292.389 acres (land and inland water 3,287.192 acres, and tidal
water 5T97 acres).
On the 10th May, 1933, the Borough Council adopted a scheme,
formulated in accordance with Sec. 24 of the Local Government
Act, 1929, for the administration of the services relating to the
registration of births, deaths and marriages. This scheme, which
came into operation on the 1st July, 1933, reduced the number of
Registration Sub-districts from four to three, namely, Hackney
North, Hackney South-West and Hackney South-East. The
Hackney North Registration Sub-District comprises the Stamford
Hill, Downs and West Hackney Wards, the Hackney South-West
Sub District, the Hackney, Kingsland and South Hackney Wards
and the Hackney South-East Sub-District, the Clapton Park and
Homerton Wards of the Borough.
The population of the Borough, as ascertained at the last Census
(1931), was 215,333. The Registrar-General has estimated that
at mid-1933 the population was 214,300. This latter figure gives
a density of population of 65.1 persons per acre.
