together with a few cases which did not continue treatment long
enough for its value to be assessed.
The lamp used is a K.B.B. atmospheric mercury.vapour lamp,
and treatments are begun at a distance of 3 or 4 feet from the lamp,
for 4 or 5 minutes, according to the patient. The distance is gradually
lessened and the time increased, until patients get 6 or 7 minutes'
treatment or longer at 18 inches or one foot. Erythema is not aimed
at. It is found that children tolerate stronger doses than adults as a
rule.
The results obtained were as follows:—
Malnutrition.—On the whole the treatment of these cases has
been very successful. The average gain in weight per child per
month was 7f ozs. (This refers to children over one year old.)
Failure to Gain Weight.—This category includes those who,
though well.nourished and apparently well, have failed for some time
to put on weight, or have gained very little. The average gain per
month with treatment was 5¼ ounces, whereas the average gain previous
to treatment was 2i ounces. In two cases there was no improvement.
