28 deaths were recorded from measles. The annual mortality
is, therefore, 0.12 per 1,000 inhabitants, compared with London 0.30
per 1,000 inhabitants. Information of 2,092 cases of measles and 43
cases of German measles was received from headmasters of elementary
schools in the Borough.
A few cases were discovered by the Health Visitors, and parents
advised (in the event of no medical man being in attendance) to obtain
proper treatment for the cases. When the nursing was considered
inadequate, a nurse was provided at the expense of the Council
through the King's Home for Nurses.
Influenza.—During 1928 there were 28 deaths in the Borough.
This is a decrease of 70 on the deaths from this cause registered
during 1927. The annual mortality rate from influenza is 0.12
per 1,000 inhabitants.
Diarrhoea.—There was a slight increase in the number1 of deaths
due to diarrhoeal disease in the Borough during 1928. The total
number of deaths from this cause was 42, and of these 37 were under
1 year of age. The annual mortality rate for diarrhoea and enteritis
during the year is 0.19 per 1,000 inhabitants.
Whooping Cough.—The deaths from this cause during the year
numbered 11. This is a decrease of 17 upon the number registered
during 1927. These deaths occurred in children under five years of
age. The mortality for Hackney is equal to 0.05 per 1,000 inhabitants,
and that for all London, 0.09 per 1,000 inhabitants. The King's
Home for Nurses attended to two cases and paid 18 visits.
Information was received from the head masters and head
mistresses of elementary schools in Hackney of 353 cases of whooping
cough occurring among their scholars during the year.
CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.

Cancer.—There were 340 deaths during 1928 due to the different
varieties of malignant disease. This is an increase of 38 on the number
registered during 1927. The annual mortality rate from malignant
disease for last year is therefore 1.56 per 1,000 inhabitants.
