* I have here to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. A. W. Brewer,
Superintendent Registrar, who has kindly abstracted the number of marriages
for the year 1928.
Births and Birth-rate.—The births registered in the Borough of
Hackney during the year 1928 numbered 4,373, of which 2,230 were
males and 2,143 females. The total shows a decrease of 16 compared
with the number registered during 1927, but of these a certain
number must be transferred to other districts, and certain births,
which occurred in outlying districts, must be transferred to Hackney
in order to get an accurate birth-rate for the Borough. The
Registrar-General has supplied the number of these transferable
births, viz., 1,328 births to be transferred to other districts and 432
to Hackney. After these necessary corrections have been made, the
correct total of registered births amongst Hackney residents is 3,477.
From this figure the birth-rate for Hackney during 1928 has been
calculated to be 16.0 per 1,000 of the population. The birth-rate for
all London for the same period is 15.9 per 1,000 of the population.
Notification of Births Act, 1907.—Under the provisions of this
Act 4,389 notifications of births were received during 1928. This
total includes notifications from medical practitioners, midwives,
parents and others. The total is 16 more than the number registered
by the Registrars of Births.
Still-Births.—Amongst the births notified 128 were still-born
This is equal to 2.8 per cent. of those notified. A table is here given
showing the number of notifications received, with other details in
connection with the same.
