The cost of the Maternity and Child Welfare service for the
coming financial year amounts to a rate of .83d. which, of course,
includes the new Centre at 28, Lower Clapton Road.
Tuberculosis.
The number of primary notifications of Pulmonary Tuberculosis
for the year is 330 and this figure, with the exception of the year
1922, is the lowest recorded during the past five years. The total
number of notifications of Tuberculosis, pulmonary and nonpulmonarv,
number 418, also the lowest recorded figures since 1921,
with the exception of the year 1922. The deaths from Tuberculosis
number 201, also the lowest recorded figure during the past five years.
At the close of 1926 there were 1,466 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis
and 674 cases of non-pulmonary Tuberculosis on the register.
At the Tuberculosis Dispensaries 1,188 suspected cases and 451
contacts to notified cases were examined. Sputum examinations
numbered 1,087. The total number of attendances at the Dispensaries
was 7,257, and 168 cases were sent for treatment to residential
institutions. A full report on the working of the Tuberculosis
Dispensaries is contained on Page 57.

and there is now no delay in notifying these cases; but as regards
cases sent for treatment at the Dispensaries there is still considerable
room for improvement. The deaths among Dispensary patients
during the past year numbered 116, and 44 of these patients, or 38
per cent., were in the final stage of the disease on first attendance;
51 patients, or 44 per cent, were in the second stage. It also appears,
from examination of the case papers, that 62 of these cases, or 53
per cent., had been suffering from the disease for a period varying
from 3 to 12 months before being referred to the Dispensary.
The Hackney Borough Council Act, 1926, has been of considerable
assistance as regards those persons suffering from Pulmonary
