REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1924
PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Town Hall, hackney, e.8
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit, in accordance with the instructions
of the Ministry of Health, the Annual Report on the health of
the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney for the year 1924.
A comparative table for the Borough showing the Death, Birth
and Infantile Mortality Rates for the past ten years is set out on
page 30.
The birth.rate is 18.5 per 1,000 for Hackney, compared with
18.7 for the whole of the County of London.
The death.rate for Hackney for the past year is 11.4, a slight
increase on the previous year.s rate of 10.6, the rate for the County
is also increased, being 12.1 as compared with 11.2 for the previous
year. The death and infantile mortality rates for the past two years
remain however the lowest ever recorded in Hackney.
The infantile mortality of the Borough, measured by the
number of deaths under 1 year of age per 1,000 births registered,
was 60, as compared with 58, the figure for last year; the Borough
average during the last 5 years 1919.1923 is 72, and the figure for all
London during the past year is 69, as compared with 60 in 1923.
The position of Hackney, as compared with the other Metropolitan
Boroughs is very satisfactory—and appears to be improving—as
is shown by the following table, which gives the death rates and
infantile mortality rates in 1924.
