Alcoholism.
Alcoholism.— During the year under consideration there was
one death from alcoholic poisoning; and 10 deaths registered as
due to cirrhosis of the liver, a condition regarded, as a rule, to
be due to excessive indulgence in alcohol, extending over lengthy
periods.

During 1924, 449 primary notifications of tuberculosis were
received, details of which are given on page 47 of this Report.
Bacteriological examination of sputa from 506 cases was made
by the Council's Bacteriologist during the same period. In 68
of these examinations the specific organism of the disease was
discovered, and in the remainder the result was negative.
The number of deaths from tuberculous disease in Hackney
during 1924, was 254, a decrease of 2 upon the deaths during
1923. These deaths are classified as follows: —
