3.—HOSPITAL, CONVALESCENT AND MIDWIFERY
ASSISTANCE.
(1) Maternity Hospitals.—The Council pays the sum of one
guinea in respect of each necessitous case admitted from the
Borough for treatment at either of these institutions. A necessitous
case being considered a patient who, by reason of poverty
or other causes, is unable to pay for the treatment received, an
amount equal to one-half the average cost per patient of the
maintenance and administration charges for the year ended
December 31st, 1922.

(2) Agreement jor the Provision of Convalescent Home
Treatment.
An agreement has been entered into, with the sanction of
the Ministry of Health, with the Invalid Children's Aid Association,
whereby the Association arranges, on behalf of the Maternity
and Child Welfare Committee, convalescent aid under the Council's
Maternity and Child Welfare scheme. The Maternity and
Child Welfare Committee, under this arrangement, is not required
to meet any cost other than that the parent is unable to contribute
towards the actual cost of the treatment provided at the
Convalescent Home.
The number of cases assisted during the year was 16.
(3) Provision of Midwives.—During the year the fees of
midwives in attendance on 78 mothers confined in their homes
were paid by the Council and in 4 cases Home Helps were
provided.
