REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH

To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit, in accordance with the instructions
of the Ministry of Health, the Annual Report on the health
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney for the year 1923.
A comparative table for the Borough showing the Death,
Birth and Infantile Mortality Rates for the past ten years is set
out on page 29.
The birth-rate is 19 6 per 1,000 for Hackney, compared with
20.2 for the whole of the County of London.
The death-rate for Hackney for the past year is 10'6, an
improvement on the previous year's rate of 12.7, the rate for the
County is also decreased, being 11.12 as compared with 13*4 for the
previous year. The death-rate of 10'6 and infantile mortality
of 58 are the lowest ever recorded in Hackney.
The infantile mortality of the Borough, measured by the
number of deaths under 1 year of age per 1,000 births registered,
was 58, as compared with 72, the figure for last year;
the Borough average during the last 5 years 1918-1922 is 83,
