CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.
Tuberculosis.—During 1912, I received 1,525 notifications of
pulmonary tuberculosis, details of which are given on page 71 of
this report.
Bacteriological examination of sputa from 246 cases was made
during the same period. In 51 of these examinations, the specific
organism of the disease was discovered, in 194 cases the result of
examination was negative, and in 1 case doubtful. The number
of deaths from tuberculous disease in Hackney during 1912 was
355, a decrease of 44 upon the deaths during the previous years.
These deaths are classified as follows:—

This number of deaths gives an annual mortality of 159
per 1,000 living.
