Polio-myelitis or Polio-encephalitis.—At a meeting of the
London County Council, held on the 27th February, 1912, an Order
was made adding the above-named disease to those infectious
diseases notifiable under Section 55 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891. The Order reads as follows:—
"The London County Council hereby resolves and orders
that Section 55 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891,
with respect to the notification of infectious disease shall
apply, in the administrative County of London, from and
including the 13th day of March, 1912, to the disease known
as Acute Polio-myelitis or Acute Polio-encephalitis.
During the year 1912 there were 8 cases of this disease notified,
4 of which were removed to hospital. No deaths from this disease
occurred during this period.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.—During the year 23 cases of this
disease were notified. Each case was visited by the Council's
Health Visitor, and where the case was not under medical treatment,
advice was tendered to seek medical treatment. The cases
were kept under observation until recovery. Ten other cases of
inflammation of the eyes in infants were brought to my notice by
the medical inspectors of the London County Council. These cases
were also visited by the Health Visitor, and the parents, where
necessary, persuaded to obtain medical help for their infants.
