The number of cases of scarlet fever removed to hospital
during the year was 473. This is equal to 91 per cent, of the total
cases notified.

The following table shows the distribution of scarlet fever in the respective sub-districts of the Borough:—

Sub-Districts.North.Central.South-West.South-East.
No. of Cases of Scarlet Fever.93201112112
Attack Rate per 1,000 living.1.73.71.91.9

It will be seen from the above that scarlet fever was most prevalent
in the central sub-district.
The deaths from this disease during 1912 numbered 8, which
is equal to a mortality-rate of 16 per 1,000 attacked and -036 per
1,000 living. The mortality-rate for London from scarlet fever
during the same year was .04 per 1,000 living.
Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.—There were 240 cases of
diphtheria and 9 cases of membranous croup notified during the
year 1912, but of these 27 cases of diphtheria and 3 membranous
croup were found subsequently not to be suffering from this
disease, thus reducing the total of genuine cases of diphtheria in
the Borough to 219. This is a reduction of 65 upon the number
which occurred during 1911. The chart shows the disease to have
been prevalent all the year, its incidence, however, keeping low
with the exception of the month of January, when there was a
slight rise in the number of cases notified.
There were 218 cases of diphtheria and membranous croup
removed to hospital during 1912. This is equal to 87 per cent,
of the total cases notified.
