This table shows a peculiar periodicity in the recurrence of this
disease, the quiescent periods being alternately about six and twelve
months.
Diarrhoea.—The year 1895 was remarkable for the large number
cf deaths from this cause, no less than 191 being registered in
Hackney; and of these 153 occurred during the third quarter. Of
the total 141 occurred amongst children under one year old, and 171
amongst children under five years old. The annual mortality from
this cause is, therefore, .88 per 1,000.
I have consulted the vital statistics of the district from 1888,
but in none of these years can I find so large a number of deaths
from this cause as in 1895. I am of opinion that the high temperature
and scarcity of water in the third quarter of the year were
instrumental in causing this high death rate.
