mean temperature was + 0.7, in May — 2.8, and in June
+ 0.6; snow fell on four days in April, on six days in May
during the first ten days, when the temperature was always in
deficit, and the rainfall in excess. In July, the weather was
unusually warm on most days, but as a few days were unusually
cold, the mean temperature was as + 0.3 Fahr. In August
it was as much as 31 degrees below the average, and in
September 1.5 in deficit; the rain in July and August was 3.10
inches below the average. October and the early part of
November were cold, the temperature in October having been
4.0 degrees below the mean, whilst for November as a whole, it
was + 0.7, the mean temperature from the 25th to December
4th, having been as much as 4.6 degrees in excess. From
December 8th to 12th, inclusive, the cold was very unusual, as
the mean temperature was minus 11.5 deg., 11.2 deg., 11.4
deg., 13.5 deg., and + 7.3 deg., respectively, the lowest temperature
at Greenwich having been 233 deg., and at Hackney,
24.0, and the highest on these days but little above freezing
point.
