In addition to my other work, I have attended 20 Board
Meetings, 28 Sanitary Committee Meetings, 7 View Committee
Meetings, and 13 Special Committee Meetings, including those
on the Dust Regulations, Lodging-house Regulations, the
River Lea, &c. I have nothing to add respecting these
Meetings, as the reports brought up by the Sanitary Committee
and myself to meetings of the Board, have already made you
acquainted with the results,—except to state that 1354 orders
for the removal of nuisances were issued by the Committee
during the year. The work done in connection with the River
Lea, which occupied a large amount of my time, especially in
the summer months, has already been referred to in another
part of this report. I trust that the efforts made by the Board
and the Committee, will lead not only to the purification of the
Lea, but also of many other rivers which are most injuriously
affected by the drainage carried into them. As large trade
interests, as well as the facilities of drainage by local sanitary
authorities are concerned in a general bill for the purification of
rivers, the great time occupied hitherto in the effort to pass a
satisfactory measure, cannot be any matter for surprise.
