confirmed that calculation, so that the number I have fixed
upon is probably rather below than above the truth. The
births registered in 1875 were 4,970, and the average of the 10
years, 1875-84, was 6,065 against 6,585 in 1885. The total
deaths in 1885 were fewer than in 1884, viz., 3,682 against
3,700, but the deaths of infants under 1 year was somewhat in
excess, having been 897 against 880. The same remark applies
to the total deaths under 5 years, as these numbered 1,555 in
1885 against 1,510 in 1884, and an average of 1,336 in 1875-84.
The excess was caused ohiefly by measles and diarrhoea, as will
be shown in another part of the report. The density of
population has increased to 53.5 persons per acre, so that the
diminished number of deaths is the more satisfactorv.
