they ceased their work, and from time to time additional houses
of this class have been measured, so that 5,014 are now entered
in the books. This is a great advantage, as whenever any
question of overcrowding of these houses occurs, it is only
necessary to turn to the book and find the number of persons
who can legally occupy any one of these rooms. The inspection
of these houses was general, and all Sanitary arrangements
deemed at that time to be objectionable were altered, and notices
for whitewashing and cleansing the houses were also served
when necessary. Since that time there has been a systematic
inspection of the houses in the district occupied by the poor,
partly under the powers vested in the Board by the 20th section
of the Sanitary Act, and partly under the Regulations. The
results of the inspections carried out in 1866 and 1867 were not
separately tabulated, so that I cannot lay before you the precise
amount of work done under the Regulations in these years, but

I submit a list of houses inspected and of nuisances abated in these houses and the adjacent yards and outbuildings since 1867, which I consider to be very satisfactory—
