odours observed at Clapton, I inspected every manufactory
which communicated with our sewers, without finding any
process that could account for them. I visited Berger's
manufactory also, and was told that nothing deleterious
was poured into the Metropolitan Board of Works' sewer,
although I had reason to believe that the smells arose from
the intermixture of some waste from their manufactory and
the sewage. An offensive liquid was occasionally poured
into our sewer at High Hill Ferry, containing lime used for
purifying methylated spirit, but there was no smell in the
distilling house. I advised the use of a tank to allow the
suspended matter to subside before letting the liquid run
into our sewer, and the use of a syphon to empty the tank.
These have been done, and I have received only one complaint
since. Notices have also been served on several
persons occupying premises upon which noxious trades were
carried on ; notably, two who prepared skins for sausages,
and a wholesale dealer in pickles. The whole of these were
removed from the District in consequence of the action
taken against them. A summons was also taken out against
the occupier of a wharf, for allowing dust, refuse and
manure to accumulate so as to be a nuisance, and an order
was obtained for its removal. Another summons was taken
out against a broker for removing goods and bedding
without previous disinfection from a house in which several
cases of scarlatina had occurred, when a penalty of £3 was
inflicted. A summons was also taken out against an owner
of seven houses which opened on to a yard common to all
the occupiers, for not properly paving and draining the
same. An order was made on the owner to do the necessary
work in 14 days. Orders were also obtained for putting
several houses into tenantable condition, or for shutting them
up; and in these cases also the owners did the necessary
work. A summons was also taken out against the owner of
a workshop, for not providing proper privy (water-closet)
