This table shows that although small pox, diarrhoea, scarlet
fever and whooping cough prevailed somewhat extensively in
Hackney during the year, the mortality from the seven chief
zymotic diseases was below the average per 1,000 population
for many years, with the exception of 1879. In 20 large
towns, the annual rate of mortality from these affections
was 4'0; in all London, 3.7; and in Hackney 3.37 per
1,000 population, which is decidedly satisfactory. The
death rate from tubercular diseases was also less than usual,
having been 2'51 per 1,000 inhabitants, whilst those from
pulmonary diseases, (except consumption,) were above the
mean, although they did not equal the mortality of 1879.
Convulsive and wasting diseases of infants were also rather
in excess of the average.
