I postponed writing this part of my report until I was able
to ascertain not only the number of inhabitants in each
Registrar's Sub-District but also of inhabited houses, as it
might have led to considerable error if I had continued to
use my calculated instead of the true number of the
population in the District. Fortunately, I had calculated
the population within about 400, so that none of my figures
previously printed, except for last year, require any
alteration. Through the courtesy of Mr. Godwin, the
Superintendent Registrar of the District, I am now able to
give those statistics, and, for the purpose of comparison, I
have added the number of inhabitants and of inhabited
houses for 1871. It is, however, as well to mention that
although some of the figures for 1881 may not be quite
correct, they are so for all practical purposes.

The table shows that the population in Hackney Sub-District
increased from 50,104 in 1871 to 76,888 in 1881, being
an excess of 26,784, or 41 per cent. of the whole. The
increase in the other Sub-Districts was much smaller, but in
all except Stamford Hill, it amounted to a substantial
number. In proportion, however, to the population of 1871,
the largest addition to the inhabitants of any Sub-District
has occurred in Stoke Newington, as we find that in 1871
