others which occurred in High Street, Homerton; Clifden
Road, Cottage Avenue, Holmbrook Street, and Brooksby's
Walk, all within the quarter of a mile radius. A few days
later, the disease appeared in Fenn Street and Templar
Road. No less than 10 out of 28 cases occurred within the
quarter mile radius, and if we include Clifden Road, which
is within the radius at the back of the Fever Hospital, there
were 12 cases out of 28, in the vicinity of the Hospital. In
the week ending October 30th, there were no less than 10
cases in the quarter mile radius, out of 18 cases in the whole
District. It is clear therefore, that the disease became
epidemic first in the vicinity of the Hospital. The table in
the appendix sufficiently shows the after progress of this
epidemic, so that I need not trace it further. In 1879, the
disease had so much decreased, that only 30 cases came to
my knowledge, but out of these, 3 occurred in Brooksby's
Walk, in houses adjoining the Hospital. From the date of
these cases, not one was reported in the neighbourhood of
the Hospital during the whole time it was closed, viz., from
September 29th, 1879, to February 8th, 1880, except one
case in Brooksby's Walk in October, apparently caught from
cases which happened in September; 1 case in Rosina
Street, and 1 in Churchill Road, all in October. Cases were
reported at intervals from various other parts of the District
during November, December and January, but none near
the Hospital. On the 14th February, a case occurred in
Rosina Street, and a month after the Hospital was re-opened,
by the following cases, viz., on March 8th, by one in
Holmbrook Street, others on the 22nd and 30th, in the Grove
and Templar Road. I need now only specify the number of
cases in the streets adjoining the Hospital, in 1879-80, viz.,
17 in 1878, 4 in 1879, and no less than 40 in 1880, when the
Hospital was not only overcrowded, but when convalescent
patients were removed to make room for acute cases. The
total number of cases reported to me from the whole District
in 1878, 1879 and 1880, were 372, 30, and 363 respectively.
